A massive collapse at a landfill in Binaliw, Cebu City, Philippines, has resulted in one death, injuries to a dozen people, and 38 others missing. The incident occurred on Thursday (January 8) when a large mound of garbage and debris buried workers at the site. Rescuers have retrieved 13 people alive, but the search continues for those still trapped.

The collapse happened at a waste segregation facility where workers were sorting recyclable materials. Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival confirmed that a 22-year-old female worker died while being transported to a hospital. The cause of the collapse remains unknown, but concerns about methane gas emissions from the landfill are complicating rescue efforts.

According to CNN, the site employs about 110 people, and it is unclear if any nearby residents were affected. Mayor Archival has assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure safety and transparency during the ongoing rescue operations.

The rescue mission involves multiple agencies, with additional rescuers expected to join the efforts, which may continue until at least Sunday (January 11). People reported that the mountain of garbage was approximately four stories high, and the collapse occurred without warning.

Authorities are holding an emergency meeting to address the situation and provide support to the affected families. Mayor Archival urged the public to pray for the safety of those involved and the strength of the rescuers.
