Derrick Groves, the final fugitive among 10 inmates who escaped from a New Orleans jail earlier this year, has been captured, per CNN.

On Wednesday (October 8), Groves, 27, was captured in Southwest Atlanta following a standoff with U.S. Marshals and Atlanta Police.

Groves had been on the run since May 16, when he and nine others escaped from the Orleans Justice Center in the early morning hours. According to Deputy U.S. Marshal Brian Fair, Groves was located at a residence and taken into custody without injuries.

Groves is a convicted killer, found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder for a 2018 Mardi Gras mass shooting that left two men dead and others wounded.

“He was one of the gunmen who opened fire with AK-47-style assault rifles on what should have been a joyous Mardi Gras family gathering,” the New Orleans District Attorney’s Office said at the time of his conviction.

The charges carry a mandatory life sentence, and Groves had been awaiting transfer when he escaped. Authorities have not released details on how the inmates managed the breakout, but an internal investigation is ongoing.

Groves’ arrest brings an end to a months-long manhunt that stretched across state lines. All ten escapees have now been captured.
