Four people were killed and six injured early Wednesday (February 25) after a Florida-registered speedboat entered Cuban territorial waters and exchanged gunfire with Cuban border guards, according to Cuban officials.
The incident took place about one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino channel near Cayo Falcones on the island's north side. The Cuban Ministry of the Interior reported on social media that a patrol with five border guard service members approached the American vessel for identification. According to the Cuban government, the crew of the speedboat opened fire first, injuring the commander of the Cuban patrol vessel. Cuban troops returned fire, resulting in four deaths and six injuries among those on the U.S. boat.
All injured individuals—on both sides—were evacuated and received medical attention. Cuban authorities stated, "In the face of current challenges, Cuba reaffirms its determination to protect its territorial waters, based on the principle that national defense is a fundamental pillar of the Cuban State in safeguarding its sovereignty and ensuring stability in the region," as reported by the Ministry of the Interior and shared on the Cuban Embassy's official X account.
U.S. officials have not yet commented on the incident, and the case remains under investigation. Cuban authorities said that efforts are ongoing to fully clarify the events, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
