Nebraska is grappling with its largest wildfire in history, as three major blazes have scorched around 600,000 acres across central and western regions. As of Sunday (March 15), none of the fires were contained, and one person has died, according to state officials.

Governor Jim Pillen declared a state of emergency, mobilizing additional resources, including the Nebraska National Guard, to combat the fires. Two UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters have been deployed to assist local firefighters. The largest of the fires, the Morrill Fire, has consumed over 460,000 acres in Morrill, Arthur, and Keith counties, claiming one life in Arthur County. Meanwhile, the Cottonwood Fire near Gothenburg has burned 100,000 acres, and the Road 203 Fire in Blaine and Thomas counties has affected over 40,000 acres.

The fires are exacerbated by a cross-country storm bringing dry and windy conditions to the area. "The winds are supposed to be extraordinary," said Gov. Pillen during a news conference on Saturday (March 14). He has called on mayors from Omaha and Lincoln to provide additional support, and both cities have sent personnel and equipment to aid in firefighting efforts.

A temporary flight restriction is in place over the affected areas, and officials urge the public not to fly drones, as they could hinder aerial firefighting operations. Governor Pillen has also issued a statewide burn ban effective until March 27 to prevent additional fires.

The governor emphasized the need for federal assistance and expressed confidence in receiving support from FEMA to cover costs associated with the wildfires.

As conditions remain challenging, with gusts up to 65 mph expected, Gov. Pillen urged residents to heed evacuation orders and remain vigilant. "I think it's important that all Nebraskans pray," he said, acknowledging the difficult days ahead.
