A veteran Icelandair pilot's retirement celebration has sparked alarm and an official investigation after he flew a Boeing 757 at an unusually low altitude above his childhood village of Vestmannaeyjar on Saturday (April 11). The incident, which occurred as Captain Ólafur Bragason, age 65, completed his final commercial flight after forty years of service, has drawn sharp criticism from the airline and led to a police referral.

According Icelandair officials, the aircraft descended to about 100 meters (328 feet) above ground level during the flyover. Residents of Vestmannaeyjar, a volcanic archipelago off southern Iceland, described feeling "noticeable noise and vibration" and said they were startled, with some fearing the plane was about to crash as it passed low over homes and treetops. The flight, traveling from Frankfurt to Keflavik International Airport, was carrying passengers at the time. No injuries were reported.

Icelandair stated that the maneuver was not part of the approved flight plan and was performed without the company's knowledge or permission. Chief Pilot Linda Gunnarsdóttir told local media, "In aviation, everything is tightly governed by procedures and checklists in normal passenger operations, and this does not fall within that framework." Gunnarsdóttir apologized to the residents, saying, "We apologize to the residents of Vestmannaeyjar if they have been disturbed."

While symbolic gestures such as flyovers sometimes occur at pilot retirements, they are typically planned in advance and conducted within strict safety and regulatory margins. Icelandair emphasized that the low-altitude pass was unprecedented and not standard practice. The airline has launched an internal review and reported the incident to the police, with aviation regulators expected to examine flight data and cockpit recordings.

Authorities will now determine if aviation regulations or safety protocols were violated and whether penalties or further legal consequences are warranted, even though Captain Bragason has retired.
