A mass shooting in Midland, Texas, left at least one person dead and 11 others injured on Friday (June 12), after a suspect opened fire on citizens before dying in a standoff with police, city officials confirmed.
According to Midland Mayor Lori Blong, the shooting took place in the 4600 block of West Wall Street. "We do have 11 known victims at this time. There's at least one victim that is dead on the scene," she said at a news conference. "The active shooter situation has ended and the shooter is confirmed deceased."
The suspect's death was confirmed at 11:37 a.m. using robot and drone footage, according to the Houston Chronicle. The city has not released information about the suspect's identity or a confirmed motive.
Police Chief Greg Snow said in a statement that officers heard gunfire coming from a building and "worked quickly to secure and clear the area."
Nine of the 11 victims were transported to Midland Memorial Hospital, where four were rushed into surgery and five were admitted in stable condition. Three of those patients have since been discharged, hospital spokesperson Tasa Richardson confirmed. The hospital went into lockdown around 8:20 a.m. and lifted the main campus lockdown by 10:10 a.m., though its emergency department remained locked down.
Mayor Blong asked the community to come together in the aftermath. "I would really ask Midlanders to pray for the families of those who have been impacted, for the victims themselves, for the family of the one who is confirmed deceased victim," she said.
